Carnival in the Kvarner: Colour, Costumes and Celebrations Near VillaMia Medveja

February isn’t just about crisp sea breezes and peaceful walks - it’s also one of the most joyful times of the year thanks to Carnival festivities across the Kvarner region. From colourful parades and creative costumes to music, street parties and local tradition, the carnival season brings towns and villages to life with energy, laughter and community spirit.

This year, the season officially runs from 17 January to 18 February 2026, and is packed with events for all ages.


Rijeka Carnival: One of Europe’s Greatest Carnival Celebrations

Just a short drive from Medveja, Rijeka’s Carnival is one of the largest in Europe - a truly spectacular sight if you’re in town during the celebrations.

  • 31 January – Children’s Carnival Parade: A lively, family-friendly procession along Korzo that’s fun to watch or join.

  • 15 February – International Carnival Parade: The highlight of the season, with thousands of participants, brilliant floats and towering creativity starting at 12:00 on Korzo.

Alongside these parades are night parties, themed events, masquerade dances and other neighbourhood happenings that keep the festive spirit alive throughout the season.


Opatija Carnival: The Heart of Carnival in the Kvarner

Not far from Medveja, Opatija Carnival also celebrates the fifth season, filling streets, promenades and squares around town with music, masks and colourful local creativity.

  • 1 February – Children’s Carnival Parade: A joyful, costumed parade from the market toward Slatina Beach, perfect for families and all ages.

  • 6 February – Masked Klapa Marathon: A spirited evening of singing and performance.

  • 8 February – Balinjerada: The famously “craziest race,” with homemade ball-bearing carts racing down the main street.


Lovran Carnival: Bold. Creative. Unforgettable.

In Lovran, festivities kick off with the traditional raising of the carnival flag and continue through colourful gatherings, music and masks. The Lovran Carnival Parade, one of the season’s central events, takes place on 8 February at 14:00 in the Old Town, drawing locals and visitors into the streets with floats, costumes and fun.
